About Us: Halas and Phos
The Greek words "Halas" and "Phos" mean "Salt" and "Light".
We got the name for our business and our Web Site from Matthew 5:13-16 which talks about being a witness to the world around us. Desiring to establish a business and ministry which is Christ-centered and which encourages, equips and empowers believers to share their faith with those who cross their paths every day and knowing from personal experience that Christian apparel is a powerful witnessing tool, we founded Halas and Phos in October 2005. We began with one brand of Christian apparel and gifts - "Kerusso® (The Greek word means - "To herald divine truth as a public crier; to preach the gospel.") Like Kerusso, our mission is to be Salt and Light to our community and to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel to the world.
Since our company’s birth we have added several other premier brands of Christian apparel and gifts:
- Amazing Grace Inspirational Gifts,
- Covenant Games,
- Disciple Shades,
- Eternal Light,
- Gardenfire,
- Indelible Creative Group,
- Kalikiano Clothing
- Living Epistles,
- Psalm 23 Jewelry Collection
- Scripts Footwear,
- Thomas Nelson Publishers,
- Broadman-Holman Publishing Group
- Kregel Publshing Group
We will soon be adding Revelation Sport, Carpentree, Lighthouse Christian Products, Fattened Calf Greeting Cards and Abingdon Press to our family of fine manufacturers.
We have also added a line of Musicians Accessories from LM Products, a secular company who produces some pretty cool Christian-Themed guitar straps. While it is not our policy – as a general guideline – to sell products produced by secular entities, we have found the owners of LM Products to be high-integrity people who are not antagonistic to our values, beliefs and mission.
SPREAD THE WORD
The whole reason for wearing Christian Witness T-Shirts and apparel is to spread The Word to everyone you meet. The great thing about wearing a Christian Witness T-shirt is that it is an excellent conversation starter. Did you know that, by some estimates, about 3000 people will read your t-shirt before it is thrown out or turned into a shop rag? If even 1% of those who read your t-shirt make a comment to you about it, that is a total of 30 people who you will have an opportunity to impact for Christ. And the other 99% who read your shirt will have to think about what it says. And think about it, they will. They may not like the message it carries, and they may not be immediately aware of what the meaning of it is to them in eternal terms, but God told us that His Word goes forth and does not return void. [1] So whether you are the first or the last person whose T-Shirt an unsaved person reads, it is no matter because it is God who brings forth the harvest. The Apostle Paul, when chastising the Corinthian church about petty differences that had arisen among them, reminded us all that we are all laborers for Christ. [2] It is not because of us that any result happens, but it is God who is responsible for the increase.
OK, then, if we are wearing a Christian T-Shirt and someone asks about it, what do we say? Do we just clam up and get all shy on them, shrinking away from the chance to make some kind of impact for Christ? Of course not! "But I'm not that kind of in your face, wittnessing on the streetcorner, kind of guy (or gal)", you say? Well, maybe not, but you're wearing that shirt, aren't you? What are you going to do? All right, let's face it, though, we can't all be a "Billy Graham", "Dwight L. Moody", "John Wesley" or a "Charles H. Spurgeon". But we can do our part. We are to be "Salt and Light" to the community around us. [3] Even if it is just a brief, encouraging word or showing an act of kindness toward the individual, you can do something. Invite him or her to church, to your small home group, to a bible study or just over to your house for a meal. ("OH MY GOSH, TO MY HOUSE FOR A MEAL? YIKES!") OK, If that's "not your style", then ask God what He would have you to do. Through the Holy Spirit He can show you how to handle that inevitable chance meeting (divine appointment) when your path intersects with someone who; is hurting and wanting SOMEONE to notice, someone to care; and then they see your t-shirt. You are - at that moment - that "someone" who can make a difference, however small, in that unbeliever's life.
OK, so let's talk about what our other responsibility is when wearing these shirts: “LIVE IT!”. That's a tough one. Examining our conduct on a daily basis (or even on a minute-by-minute basis) is hard, if we are honest, because while our T-Shirts may "talk the talk", do our lives line up to it? Are we "walking the walk"? There is an EXCELLENT study from "Bible Minute" that we read the day we decided to build this page. It is reprinted here in its entirety for your edification and admonition:
Bible Study
Title: Living What You Believe
Date: Oct 12, 2005
Topic(s): Christian Living/Situational
Scripture: Romans 13:11-14
Originally, Greek tragedies had only one actor. This actor, called a hypocrities, portrayed the different characters by changing his mask and costume. That's where we get our English word hypocrite, meaning one who pretends to be something he or she is not.
Unfortunately, this kind of hypocrisy also exists in the church. If a person is going to "talk the talk," he or she needs to also "walk the walk." Let's look at what the Bible has to say about this.
"And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts" (Romans 13:11-14, NKJV).
- What should motivate you to live according to what you claim to believe?
- What should you do to make your "walk" (life) consistent with your "talk" (your beliefs)?
- List four of the activities mentioned in the above verse that are no longer appropriate for you as a Christ-follower.
Do you find yourself slipping back into the "old" way of life? It's easy to do. That's why the apostle Paul says you need to not only "cast off" the old ways, but "put on the armor of light." We need not only to stop doing what we shouldn't do, but we also need to start doing what we should.
Take the four activities you listed above that a Christ-follower should stop doing, and list a substitute that would be consistent with your new life.

[1] God's Word Never Returns Void
"For My thoughts are not your thoughts,Nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
"For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud,
That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater,
"So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;
It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it."
Isaiah 55:8-11 NKJV
[2] Planting and Watering
Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, you are God's building. 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 NKJV
[3] Salt and Light
You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:13-16 NKJV
